Distribution transformers

Distribution transformers convert high voltage electricity from the national grid into usable voltage levels for home and business use.

Single and three phase, dry and oil immersed transformers with a power rating between 10kVA and 2500kVA, which are designed for 11kV and 22kV networks, must meet minimum energy performance standards.

Importers and manufacturers may not sell distribution transformers unless they are tested and comply with the Energy Efficiency (Energy Using) Regulations 2002.

A public consultation on a possible revision to the MEPS for distribution transformers was held in early 2011.

MEPS requirements are set out in AS 2374.1.2. Test specifications are set out in 2375 for dry type, and AS 2374.1 for other type transformers. Standard AS 2374.1.2-2003 is available from Standards New Zealand.

Distribution transformers sold in New Zealand have been subject to MEPS since 2003, and high efficiency levels are currently voluntary. However, it is proposed that Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) increase in stringency around 1 October 2011.

MEPS for wind energy network transformers

33 kV networks are to be included in the proposed MEPS for distribution transformers in Australia and New Zealand. EECA has been working with suppliers on the efficiency levels in the standard AS 2374. This covers single and three phase, dry and oil immersed transformers with a power rating between 10kVA and 2500kVA.

The MEPS is planned for around 1 October 2011, following consultation in January 2011 on a Regulatory Impact Statement or cost benefit analysis.
