Electric hot water cylinders

All electric storage water heaters must comply with minimum energy performance standards (MEPS).

Regulatory requirements

There are steps you must take to meet the requirements of the Energy Efficiency (Energy Using Products) Regulations 2002.

Check out:

Standards

The Standard is AS/NZS 4692.1.2005 and is available at Standards New Zealand. This is a joint Standard covering storage hot water cylinders except for those used in the dairy industry. The test Standard is AS/NZS 4692.2:2005. However older Standards NZS 4602:1988 and NZS 4606:1989 can be used for alternative test methods.

Proposed review of energy efficiency measures

To determine if further cost-effective energy savings can be made for electric storage water heaters, a review of the existing standards is planned for late 2011.

More information will be made available as the review progresses. If you are interested in being included in stakeholder updates about this review, please email your contact details to regs@eeca.govt.nz.
