Air conditioners heat pumps – scope and exemptions
Scope and exemptions information for:
Non-ducted air conditioners and heat pumps
Ducted air conditioners and heat pumps
Water-source heat pumps (water-to-air and brine-to-air heat pumps)
Non-ducted air conditioners and heat pumps
Scope
The Standard specifies the standard conditions on which the ratings of single package and split-system non-ducted air conditioners employing air- and water-cooled condensers and heat pumps employing air-cooled condensers are based, and the test methods to be applied for determination of the various ratings. This International Standard is limited to systems utilizing a single refrigeration circuit and having one evaporator and one condenser.
NOTE: for the purposes of the Standard, the term "equipment" will be used to mean "non-ducted air conditioners and/or non-ducted heat pumps".
The Standard also specifies the test conditions and the corresponding test procedures for determining various performance characteristics of these non-ducted air conditioners and heat pumps.
Exemptions
The Standard does not apply to the testing and rating of:
- Water-source heat pumps
- Multiple split-system air conditioners and heat pumps (A unit having two or more indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit
- Units designed for use with additional ducting
- Mobile (windowless) units having a condenser exhaust duct.

Ducted air conditioners and heat pumps
Scope
The Standard establishes performance testing and rating criteria for factory-made residential, commercial and indutrial, electrically driven, mechanical-compression, ducted air conditioners using air and water-cooled condensers and ducted air-to-air heat pumps. The requirements of testing and rating contained in the Standard are based on the use of matched assemblies.
The Standard is limited to systems which use a single refrigeration circuit and have one evaporator and one condensor
Exemptions
The Standard does not apply to the testing and rating of:
- Individual assemblies for separate use
- Equipment using the absorbtion refrigeration cycle
- Non-ducted air conditioners or non-ducted heat pumps
- Water-source heat pumps.
Note: for the purposes of the Standard, the term "equipment" will be used to mean "ducted air conditioner" and/or "ducted heat pumps".

Water-source heat pumps (water-to-air and brine-to air heat pumps)
Scope
The Standard establishes performance testing and rating criteria for factory-made residential, commercial and indutrial, electrically driven, mechanical-compression type, water-to-air and brine-to-air heat pumps. The requirements for testing and rating contained in the Standard are based on the use of matched assemblies.
Notes: For the purpose of the remaining clauses, the terms "equipment" or "heat pumps" may be used to mean "water-to-air heat pumps" or "brine-to-air heat pumps" and the term "liquid" refers to either "water" or "brine".
Airconditioners with water cooled condensers have been excluded from AS/NZS 3823.1.1 and AS/NZS 3823.1.2 and are covered under the requirements of this Standard.
