Vehicle fuel economy

Driving a car that uses less fuel saves money, and also reduces harm to the environment from the emission of carbon dioxide. There can be big differences in fuel consumption between cars of the same or similar size which is where the Vehicle Fuel Economy Label can help people make an informed decision about the vehicles they are looking at.

Our vehicle fuel economy programme

All new cars, and all cars manufactured since 2000 and imported since 2005 for sale in New Zealand, must display information about the vehicle's fuel economy, whenever that information is available.

This applies to any vehicle sold by a motor vehicle trader and any person selling a vehicle on internet trading websites.

The information is shown on a vehicle fuel economy label that is attached to vehicles for sale, or included in a website listing.

EECA and the New Zealand Transport Agency share responsibility for the website database that delivers fuel economy labels and information. EECA also monitors compliance with the regulations.
